However, cookies can be used for negative purposes. Because it stores information about users' browsing preferences and browsing history, cookies can be used as a form of spyware.
5. The definition of cookies
The term "cookie" refers to the technologies by which certain information is collected automatically. An "Internet Cookie" (also known as a "browser cookie" or "HTTP cookie" or simply "cookie") is a small file, consisting of letters and numbers, that will be stored on your computer, mobile device or other equipment of a user accessing the Internet.
The cookie is installed by a web server's request from a browser (eg Internet Explorer, Chrome) and is completely "passive" (does not contain software, viruses or spyware and cannot access the information on the hard drive to the user who installed them).
A cookie consists of 2 parts:
-
name
-
the content or value of the cookie
Furthermore, the lifetime of a cookie is limited from the moment of installation. Technically, only the webserver that sent the cookie can access it again when a visitor returns to the website associated with that webserver.
Cookies themselves do not require personal information to be used and, in most cases, do not personally identify Internet users.
Cookies are the central point of the efficient functioning of the Internet, helping to generate a friendly browsing experience and adapted to the preferences and interests of each user.
Refusing or disabling cookies can make some sites impossible to use. Refusing or deactivating cookies does not mean that visitors will no longer receive online advertising - only that they will no longer be able to take into account their preferences and interests, highlighted by their browsing behavior.
Due to their flexibility and the fact that most of the most visited and largest websites use cookies, these are almost inevitable. Disabling cookies shall not allow visitor access to the most popular and used sites including Youtube, Gmail, Yahoo and others.
6. Main categories of cookies
Session cookies
These are temporarily stored in the cookie folder of the web browser for it to store until the visitor exits the respective web-site or closes the browser window.
Persistent cookies
These are stored on the hard drive of a computer or device (and generally depend on the default cookie lifetime). Persistent cookies include those placed by a website other than the one that the visitor accesses at that time - known as 'third party cookies' - which can be used anonymously. to memorize the interests of a user so that the most relevant advertising is delivered to visitors.
7. Advantages of cookies
A cookie contains information that links a web-browser (user / visitor) to a particular web-server (Website). If a browser accesses that web-server again, it can read the information already stored and react accordingly.
Cookies provide visitors with a pleasant browsing experience and support the efforts of many websites to provide comfortable and easily accessible services to users: eg. preferences regarding online confidentiality or relevant advertising.
8. Timespan of cookies
Cookies are managed by web servers. The validity period of a cookie is limited and may vary significantly, depending on the purpose for which it is placed.
Some cookies are used only for one session (session cookies) and are no longer retained once the user has left the website and some cookies are retained and reused each time the user returns to that website until the expiration date. - what can be a few minutes, hours, days or even years (permanent or fixed cookies).
In the category of session cookies, the cookies indicated in point 10 are included in the a-d letters, these being eliminated when the browser related to the Site is closed.
In the category of persistent cookies, the cookies indicated in point 10 are entered in the letters e-h
However, cookies can be deleted by the user at any time through the browser settings.
9. Cookies placed by third parties
Certain content sections on some sites may be provided through third parties / providers (eg news box, a video or an advertisement). These third parties may also place cookies through the Site and they are called "third party cookies", because they are not placed by the owner of the respective website. Third party providers must also comply with the law in force and the privacy policies of the owner of the Site.
10. Use of cookies by the Site
A visit to the Site may place cookies for the purposes of:
a. Cookie necessary for the functioning of the Site
b. Cookies related to multimedia players (eg. flash player cookies), active during a session
c. Social plug-in sharing cookies for users logged on to social platforms
d. Performance cookies
This type of cookie retains the preferences of the user, so no need to set them at each visit.
e. Visitor analysis cookies
Each time a user visits the Site, third-party analytics software (notably Google Analytics and Wordpress Platform) generates a user analytics cookie and statistics. This cookie tells the Company if a user has visited the Site before and helps to optimize the interaction with the visitor. The browser will tell you if this cookie is installed and if not, one will be generated. It allows the monitoring of the unique users who visit the Site and the frequency of visits.
As long as a visitor is not registered on this Site as an user (registration option which is not offered by the Website), this cookie cannot be used to identify individuals, being used solely for statistical purposes.
Users can disable or delete individual cookies. More details can be found at https://policies.google.com/technologies/cookies.
f. Cookies for geotargetting
These cookies are used by a software that determines which country the Site visitors come from (in particular, using Google Analytics) by collecting IP addresses. The cookie is used to ensure the security of the Site, but also to optimize the interaction with users, being used anonymously (you can also hide the collected IP addresses) in order to target the content.
g. Cookies for advertising
These cookies allow the Company to find out whether or not a visitor has viewed an online advertisement, which is its type and how long it has been since it saw the advertising message. These cookies are also used to target online advertising, keeping information about the content viewed and not about the visitors.
h. Cookies from third-party advertising providers
Some of the advertising you find on the Site may belong to third parties. Some of these parties use their own anonymous cookies to analyze how many people have been exposed to a message, or to see how many people have been exposed multiple times to the same advertisement.
Thus, the Company may also use third-party cookies for better targeting of advertising / information. These cookies are anonymous, they store information about the visualized content, not about the users. Also, cookies are set anonymously through other websites that the Company advertises. By receiving them, the Company can use them to recognize a person as a visitor to that site and so if he later visits the Site, advertising based on this information can be delivered.
The companies which generate these cookies have their own privacy policies and the Site does not have access to read or write these cookies. Those third party cookies can be used to show users targeted advertising on other sites, based on the visitor's navigation on the Site. These cookies may also come from third parties such as: Google, Facebook etc.
11. Information processed by means of cookies
Cookies store information in a small text file that allows a website to recognize a browser. The web server shall recognize the browser until the cookie expires or is deleted.
The cookie stores important information that improves the Internet browsing experience, depending on the type of cookie implemented on the Site, but also those that identify errors of use.
12. Recommendations for the use of cookies
Cookies are everywhere and cannot be avoided if the visitor wants to enjoy access to the best and largest Internet sites - local or international.
With a clear understanding of how they operate and the benefits they bring, visitors can take the necessary security measures so they can confidently surf the Internet. Thus, they can customize their browser settings for cookies at any time, to reflect a comfortable level from the point of view of data security and the use of cookies.
If the visitor is not disturbed by cookies and is the only person using the computer, he or she may set long deadlines for storing browsing history and personal access data. However, if the visitor shares access to the computer, they may consider setting the browser to delete individual browsing data each time they close the browser. This is a way to access websites that place cookies and delete any visit information at the end of your browsing session.
Many spyware detection and prevention applications include site attack detection. This prevents the browser from accessing sites that might exploit browser vulnerabilities or download dangerous software. As a result, visitors need to make sure they have their browser updated. Many of the cookie-based attacks are made by exploiting the weaknesses of older versions of browsers.
13. How to stop cookies
Disabling and refusing to receive certain cookies may make certain sites unusable, usable only partially or difficult to visit and use, as is the case with the Site. Also, refusing to accept cookies does not mean that visitors shall no longer receive / see online advertising.
It is possible to set it in the browser so that these cookies are no longer accepted or the browser can be set to accept only certain categories of cookies for which the user's consent is required (so it does not apply to the cookie category necessary for the operation of the Site). All modern browsers offer the ability to change cookie settings.
Thus, the visitor can modify at any time the choices regarding the cookies for which his/her consent is required, by unchecking the corresponding box. These settings can be found in the pop-up available permanently at the bottom of the page, where you can choose between:
Choosing all cookies AND Changing manual cookie settings - Choose cookie according to your preferences.
Thus, visitors can choose to express their consent to the use of one, several or all cookies that do not fall into the category of those indispensable for the use of the Website or the transmission of communications, and change their decision at any time, without thereby affecting in any way the possibility of browsing the Site.
